VETS 2 SCORE 7 FOR THE FIRST TIME IN LIVING MEMORY

After the previous win weeks win against bottom of the league this was a chance for Vets 2 to demonstrate their recent improved form against a team in the upper half of the league.

The team lined up with Reynolds in goal, a back four of Brown, Duncan Taylor, Hyde and Knott; a midfield of the young Neil Wright, MacDonald, Dermott and Patrick and up front the speedy twins of Piet V and Simon Weaver.

An early goal was the prematch instruction and after 5 minutes of vets 2 pressure a corner fell nicely to Scott who lashed it into the net, just what the doctor ordered. Continued pressure by vets 2 demanded a second goal and sure enough Piet escaped his marker and slid a slide rule pass to Neil, who was outsprinting his marker, to score into an open goal. 2-0 with less than 15 minutes gone.

The rest of the first half was played in our half and although they had a lot of the ball the defence stayed firm giving little away and with the speed of Piet, Simon and Neil we always looked dangerous on the break and sure enough it was on one of these breaks just before half time when Weaver was put through 1-1 with the keeper Simon played a deft Brazilian style chip over the keeper to make it 3-0.

Half time Maza replaced Brown and the instructions were to kill the game with a 4th goal which obligingly came in the early minutes from Hyde following another corner that bobbled around a bit before Hyde toe poked it home. 4-0 gave the opportunity for Dermot to have his back massaged as he was replaced by Phil Dean.

The rest of the half was relatively quiet and was finished off by three goals in the last 10 minutes, two deserved goals for Piet and a chip into an open goal (just) for MacDonald. Hughie got a chance to test his injured leg for the last five minutes, touched the ball twice and apparently set up four chances.

An excellent performance against a team in a bit of disarray, however, we have played worse team and not got our just deserves. The back four looked very solid, the midfield hassled and hustled all day and Piet and Simon caused continuous problems to their defence. Man of match was close between the two two-goal scorers of Scott and Piet but went deservedly to Scott who controlled the midfield as well as scoring two good goals.
