Who else but ManU comes back from 2 down!
Best day of the week announced itself - an early kick off on a chilli but clear Saturday afternoon. A newly promoted team with everything to prove and nothing to lose were on the menu for us today. The changing room felt a little subdued despite the welcome return of our main man Jonny 5. Nerves? Nah. Complacency? Well you'd hope not. Hangovers? Always a possibility.
As is our way - we talked a great game before KO, the gaffer J.McGrath insisted that we begin the game focused, we were going to dominate our opponents by winning every 1st and 2nd ball. We were going to zip the ball around the park with speed and accuracy, and we were going to supply the best striker in the league with the ammunition he dreams of, to fire us to victory and to preserve our place at the top of the league. Easy.
So it will come as no surprise that by half-time we were 2-nil down and looking pretty shoddy. Belief was lacking. From the moment the half-time team talk began, however, it was apparent that McGrath senior lacked no such thing. You could feel the energy in the players as they stepped back across the touch-line on to the field of battle his words "we're not playing for a draw, go out there and bring home all 3 points" still ringing in our ears.
From the off we were back to our best, the back 4 were strong and mean, they were hitting challenges hard, and as our opponents were picking themselves up off the floor, they gazed at each other seemingly wondering if this was the same team they had played against in the first half.
The pitch was prefect, just soft enough, so when you step you feel your studs slide into the ground and take a grip. Our Captain Lamarra along with the Boite a Bang Lambrechts and the Pirloesque Vadora wrestled back control of the midfield and started to launch the first wave of many attacks. Our opponents were so concerned by the threat posed by the powerful Billiet they sacrificed their forward, their best player and moved him to right back in order to try and stem the onslaught. Then Christian and McGrath entered the frey on the right hand side and upfront respectively. As N.McGrath took his place up top next to Tommy the Machine Gun Kellerman they looked at each other and a nod was all they needed to confirm their game plan.
The perfect ball was provided and Nils knocked it into Tommys path, and he was off, the defender chased him with all he had and with their keeper looming down on him, Tommy cooly slotted the ball past him and it nestled in the bottom right hand corner. The collective adrenaline rushed, we grabbed the ball and placed it back on the center circle and stared at our opponents. 1-2 was the score. 15 minutes to play.
We were firing on all cylinders, every one of us was winning the personal battles. The pitch was cutting up and getting heavy and we could see the energy draining from the faces of our opponents. They were hanging on. Another attack, another last ditch tackle, time was ticking.
The ball bounced out for a throw mid-way into their half. Nils picked up the ball and handed to Billiet, they both knew what to do, Nils set off as quickly as his legs would carry him towards their goal, Billiet duly delivered one of his trademark catapults from the touch line. Sandwiched between defender and keeper McGrath rose and nodded the ball across the 6 yard box, where Thomas was waiting patiently to stick it in the back of the net. Halleluha! What a come back! 2-2.
But the story doesn't end there. Determined and focussed, RBBFC1 pushed on. We needed 3 points. Champions never give in. Championships are won and lost by the smallest margins. The battle raged on midfield with Lamarra on the front lines as always, digging in hardest. Their desperation caused them to hack him down as he was about to break through enemy lines again. Everybody up - this is it.
We knew this was the final kick of the game. Step forward one of leaders, Jonny 5. He directed the operation, he along with the rest of the big men would act as a decoy and head for the first-post, and McGrath was instructed to sneak round the back to the far-post. McGeehan was the key, the delivery had to be pinpoint. As he stepped up and clipped the ball, the crowd held their collective breath. Sure enough he'd picked out McGrath who rose and pinged it back across the face of goal. And what happen next you may wonder? Well what do you think? Tommy emerged from the crowd and hammered it home. Game, set and match RBBFC! - Viva RBBFC!!!
When the dust settled, we knew that it was an important 3 points. But just as important are the points on offer next week. Onwards.
