The Balds are Back in Town
Team: Mercelis / Hodgson, Lambrecht, McGrath, Lebbink / Lamarra, Ricketts, McGeehan / Vadora, Kellermann, Billiet
Subs: De Roeck, Legère, Weaver
Bruce Willis. Andre Agassi. Jonjo Shelvey. Just three examples of the often legendary status attained by bald men in different walks of life, and so it proved as RBBFC (Royal Brussels Bald Fan Club) took on Ambiance Auderghem on a chilly afternoon at Rosières.
"Know when to hold them", McGrath senior emphasised to the team before kick-off. "Know when to fold them", McGrath junior continued, before adding "know when to walk away, know when to run". With these tactically astute father-and-son instructions firmly in mind, RBBFC approached the match in confident mood.
The first half saw RBBFC with a decent amount of possession yet struggling to make any real inroads against AA's physical – or, in the case of their left-back, agricultural - defensive ranks. Nonetheless, the men in white were getting stuck in to tackles and winning most 50/50 challenges and headers.
Vadora saw a powerful header from a McGeehan corner well saved by their keeper, Billiet and Kellermann were getting the better of their opponents on the flanks, Hodgson defended diligently, while Ricketts spooned several ambitious shots into "Tree Z". The referee's enthusiastic knowledge of the ABSSA Rule Book small-print was also proving tricky to negotiate, with the award of several free-kicks in dangerous positions. These were well-handled by Mercelis, who seemed to magically morph into Michel Preud'homme while doing so.
"There’ll be time enough for counting, when the deal is done", McGrath senior informed the team after a goalless first half. Slightly confused, the team started the second half by passing the ball better while slowly applying more pressure in the AA half. Lambrecht, Lebbink and McGrath continued to win everything at the back, while Lamarra and McGeehan were up and down the pitch and snapping into tackles more often than the cry of "free beer!" can be heard on Thursday evenings in a certain Brussels square.
The screw began to turn in RBBFC's favour with Coach McGrath's bold call to unleash transfer deadline-day signing Jordan Weaver on a tiring AA defence, with a flowing one-touch move involving Vadora and Kellermann ending in a shot against the post by the debutant. Shortly afterwards, following an adventurous David Luiz-esque shimmy upfield from McGrath, and a session of head tennis in the box, a beautifully measured pass across goal from Kellermann (that's how Arsène Wenger saw it, anyway) was slammed into the net by Weaver. As AA heads dropped, RBBFC could smell blood, and a pass over the top from Ricketts was finished in fine "Lukakian" style by Billiet. AA could take no more and the final whistle soon blew. 2-0 to RBBFC!
Beers were soon served up and McGeehan departed for his customary ice-bath, followed by no-one in particular. The absence of Mojena meant that the team could enjoy a less nervous shower than usual, while AA's antics in the bar afterwards suggested that it might be "Ambulance Auderghem" by the end of the afternoon.
As for your reporter, faced repeatedly with the question "what’s it like to have no hair?", I would answer: "on this afternoon, it felt great!". And even better when looking at the current league table.
