To long ago to remember.
TEAM (SUBS): Mercelis / McGrath, Lachia (Thom), Minne / Philpot, Vasquez (Deroeck), McGeehan, Brown, Hodgson / Donner, Kellerman
It was a beautiful October day, sunny blue skies and 21 degrees. Game 4, the mighty whites were still undefeated. For the first time RBBFC were playing Choule with Chatelle. Steve was having a drink and a jig in Germany and we'd lost Luka, Joaquin and Spencer from last week's squad. This would be a test of the squads strength in depth.
The game began brightly, both teams moving the ball around well but without either side creating any clear cut chances. 15 mins in, Nils cleared it, unsuccessfully, the ball dropped to a Choule midfielder who found their little number 9 in acres of space just outside the penalty area. The RBBFC back line raised their arms in unison and awaited an offside call that never came. Their man neatly cliped it over Kris to make it 0-1 to the away team.
Allez Les Blancs! RBBFC rallied, moving the ball from back to front quickly, Hodge, Rob and Daniel all got shots off and Tommy glanced a near post header across goal form a corner and smashed the ball against the bar after a neat little turn. Still one down at half time.
RBBFC had the best of the chances, but Choule and Chatelle were not rolling over, they were a confident side in possession
Within a couple of minutes of the restart, James found Daniel outside the box, who chipped beautifully over their keeper from 25 yards out. The momentum was now with the home team. Rob was probing down the left, beating his man at will and creating chances. On one occasion, Rich found James with a nicely timed through ball, only for the flying wing-back to squander the chance. The home supporters were getting restless as the clock clicked ticked onwards towards the inevitable final whistle.
Rich pushed Nils forward and immediately found him with a neat reverse pass, a one touch lay-off and Daniel was in, down their inside right. He looked up and slipped Tommy in for the one on one. All of a sudden time stood still. Tommy and the Choule keeper, stood and looked from each other to the ball and back to each other. Finally Tommy shot, at point blank range, but the shot was blocked. Time was running out...
Jean Minne Delap long throws are the stuff of legends, as he picked up the ball and dried it in his shirt the clock ticked into the final 5 minutes. Jean launched a rocket flat across the box where McGrath darted in front of the Choule centre half and glanced it in to the far corner. Hallelujah. 2-1 up and just two minutes to go.
At this point, I'd like to mention that James insisted on the way back in the car, that he get a mentch for his pre assist. I don't remember it, but he was suggesting that he'd tried to play a through ball, it got intercepted and we scored from the proceeding throw. Criminal really that we don't record those moments in stats, but hey, the minimum you deserve is a mentch. And uve got one.
Disappointingly, we held on to our lead for less than a minute when a looping cross from Chatelle was turned in my a smart finish from close range. 2-2. Stoppage time remaining. They think its all over. Choule nick it from the kick off and are suddenly on the break. A cross from the left finds Chatelle with time and space at the far post. Everyone supporting the rbbfc have their heart in their mouth, his first time effort flies wide of the post.
Final whistle blows. All square.
