Vets 1 fall short after early concession
All the conditions were met on Saturday 10 November 2018 to enjoy an excellent afternoon of football: strong squad with 15 available players, nice weather and strong motivation to take the three points. VETS1 would have loved to see Ledbury supporting us but "Monsieur Carl” had something more interesting (?) to do J.
Results and expectations can change very quickly in football and that is what happened on Saturday. VETS1 started the game too slowly and conceded an early goal after a few minutes (0-1).
Almost immediately after that, Sejersen had to leave the pitch due to a leg injury. Pablo came to the rescue and showed very quickly his quality: comfortable with the ball in the air and good hand relaunch. Apparently Pablo was an excellent goalie in his youth!
Initially knocked-back by this early goal, VETS1 started to play their level and showed what they are capable of during the second part of the first half: good fighting spirit, good passes, positive talking…with a few good chances to score for Moreuil.
A one goal deficit meant VETS1 were still in the game and they started well the second half: a well-organized defence, Legere, Knight, Rice, Moreuil and Yearsley demanding the ball and keeping possession, and a (lone) fighter Griffiths upfront.
VETS1’s effort was almost rewarded when Christmas’s screamer hit the goal post. As the second half went on, VETS1 were physically in better shape than the opponent. There were some good combinations in the midfield but the last pass did not arrive at (right) destination. Unfortunately VETS1 were not able to score and the final result did not change (0-1).
Someone (Monsieur Carl?) would say that a fair result would have been at least a draw. The general feeling in the team afterwards was that the game was a missed opportunity. Overall, the link-up play between the defence-midfield-attack could be improved for the coming games. At their best, VETS1 showed in the past games that they have the quality to aim for the middle table.
Football can be strange at times for VETS1: a very good start of the season followed by some disappointing outcomes. Saturday’s result showed that VETS1 should battle until the end of the season to meet their first objective: STAY IN THE FIRST DIVISION! And it starts already by getting three points next Saturday!
