Trying to get an RBBFC1 squad to listen to pre-game strategy is hard enough but throw in a rugby world cup semi final and you have a near impossible task. Coach John and Captain Jean chose the only available strategy...if you can't beat em join em. They waited until England had all but wrapped up the victory and then Jean gave the line-up before John made sure we were ready to channel England's performance into our own. Time to play to our best standards from the beginning was the short but sweet message.
It was clear from the kick-off that there would only be one team in the game today. We had come to dominate from the beginning and Choule would have a tough job denying us.
Two notable early chances fell to Jacob. First he found himself through on goal following a delightful long diagonal through-ball from Tarik. Sadly his shot across goal rolled just past the wrong side of the post.
Second time lucky. Following a nice move through our midfield Dani dribbled into the box and squared to Thomas. His shot was tipped on to the underside of the bar only for the rebound to bounce up for Jacob. He smartly looped his header over the defenders on the line, the ball a clear 50cm over the line. Their keeper, purely because he should, dejectedly scooped the ball out of the goal. We started celebrating.... only for the ref to look away blankly and award a corner. No VAR, no TMO, just ABSSA. Never mind, just a small delay before we inevitably take the lead.
That lead would have to wait another 10 minutes though while a stray dog decided to show us the type of fluid, dynamic, offensive movement Jean keeps e-mailing us about. Weaving in and out of Choule defenders like a young George Best, Paul Pugba was finally giving the crowd a reason to get excited. "Sign him up!" came the cries, "better first touch than James" came another. As Jean took him to the sideline to offer him a co
As Jean took him to the sideline to offer him a contract at Composil for joining RBBFC the game re-started.
Finally we made the breakthrough we deserved. Following a high press, Thomas was hustling their defenders when a ball back to their keeper was short and he nicked in to take it off the goalies toes and slot into an empty net. 0-1 to the good guys. Half time.
Half time message was to stop playing long balls down the middle to their 7 foot centre half. Ahhh, sorry, that bit wasn't in Jean's email. Got it now. So we kicked off the second half and continued where we'd left off, dominating. Lukic, Rich and Spence in control of the midfield were pulling the strings and moving the ball around nicely. We had a few half chances without really threatening the scoreline.
Time for some subs to add a new spark. Joaquin on for Jacob coming on on the left side, moving Hodge over to the right. Joaquin immediately making an impact with lots of strong runs down the wing keeping RBBFC1 on the front foot. Next move was Spence off making way for Sioux. Sioux up top, Daniel right and Hodge, officially named the team's swiss army knife, into defensive midfield.
Finally we added a second and closed the game. But not before Choule gave us a moment of panic. Their only decent move of the game ended with a ball across the back of our defense. First 2 defenders were out of reach and the ball was coming across nicely for their forward. Thankfully Tarik had read the danger incredibly well and cut across to clear the danger. From his clearance we pretty much went straight up the pitch and scored. Daniel into Thomas. Thomas turned and played the ball into Sioux on the right. Sioux drove forward and played a great ball across for Thomas, who had made an intelligent run to the far post, to slide the ball under the keeper and kill the game. 0-2.
We closed the game out comfortably and probably could have added to the scoreline. Final whistle, clean sheet, 3 points against a team and on a pitch where we have often dropped points. We'll take that.
Mom for Hodgson with Luka and Tarik picking up votes along the way. Beers in the sun to close the afternoon out. Hard to beat.
